Jim Barclay

What do you know?

I am a qualified accountant and MBA holder. My background includes eight years as Finance Director of Merseytravel, a c£360m public transport organisation. I am an experienced executive and now non-executive Director having worked in the public – Central and Local Government, private and charitable sectors in the public transport, housing and higher education sectors.

Why do you do what you do?

I am passionate about businesses that can have a real social, environmental and economic impact, and have developed expertise in strategic leadership, corporate governance and stakeholder management. I am very fortunate to hold a number of external appointments including Board Member roles at a higher education institution in North Wales and a North West housing association.

How can you be useful?

In recognition of the many people who have supported me in his career, I am now a business mentor and has supported a number of people in a variety of sectors. The focus of my activities includes strategic business reviews, supporting businesses to win contracts in competitive tender and helping clients to pick the right partner and make sense of business finance and managing cash flow.

What album has most inspired you?

The first album I ever purchased was in 1973, and it was 'Band on the  Run' by Wings. All these years on, I still enjoy listening to it. I like the tone, skill and mastery of the musicians, and Paul McCartney effortlessly leads the band. Sounds a bit like Do-Well, although Ken hasn’t got Paul’s musical ability!
